Suman Khatiwada displayed one of the rare innings in Nepali domestic women’s Twenty20 cricket smashing a 52-ball 77 leading Lalitpur Mayor XI to an easy 28-run victory over Lumbini Province in the Lalitpur Mayor Women’s Championship on Sunday.
Bailing out her team from a precarious 36-5, Suman, who is now under national team payroll, got involved in a huge 108-run partnership with Ashmina Karmarchaya as Lalitpur posted a tournament-high 144-5 in 20 overs.
Lumbini, in reply, were restricted to 117-5. Their batswoman got the start but failed to provide the lift under pressure of a huge target.
The day was all about Suman whose innings reflected the ones seen during men’s cricket. She smashed nine fours and two sixes, one the biggest in the tournament that hit the sight screen and the other a perfectly timed cover drive.
Ashmina played a second fiddle scoring 28-ball 20. Sushmita Bhushal, Swastika Bajgai, Kritika Marasini and Saraswati Pun took a wicket each for Lumibi, who are considered the tournament minnows.
Lumbini’s biggest partnership came for the third wicket between captain Nary Thapa (20) and Saraswati GM as they added 48 runs. Saraswati scored a 52-ball 46 with two boundaries. Opener Nitu Bhandari and Nary scored 20 runs each.
Captain Saraswati Kumari Chaudhary, Aarati Bidari and Shila Chhetri took a wicket each for Lalitpur, a combined team comprising of the best players of the Prime Minister Cup from Bagmati, Gandaki and Province 2.
Earlier in the day, Jyoti Pandey continued with her consistent performance scoring her first half century of the tournament in APF’s second consecutive victory. A day after sweeping aside Prime Minister Cup champions Province 1 by eight wickets, APF defeated Sudur Paschim by 37 runs.
Batting first, Jyoti’s 50-ball 59 and Sarita Magar’s 42-ball 35 lifted APF to 127-2. Sudur Paschim were bundled out for just 90 runs with six balls to spare.
Somu Bist struck early with two wickets and Binu Budha Magar wreaked havoc in the middle order taking 2-8 from two overs. Skipper Sita Rana Magar also had two scalps.
Sunita Lohar top scored for Sudur Paschim with a 22-ball 23 hitting three boundaries and Sunday’s winner against Lalitpur, Dolly Bhatta, made 16 off 18 with two fours.
Earlier, Jyoti began the APF innings with a 56-run partnership with Sita (16) and added another 52 with Sarita. Jyoti hit seven boundaries in her 50-ball 59 and Sarita chipped in 42-ball 35. Sarita struck three fours.
