Sompal comes, makes runs, picks up wickets

Very rare people want to call Sompal Kami as a genuine all rounder because he doesn’t have a half century in an official game or the chunk of runs in a single match. Coming in at No 7 or 8, may be sometimes No 9, Sompal hardly gets time to settle down in the crease and display his batting skills that would line him up as Nepali cricket’s Mr Perfect. But he is.

Most of the cricketers would envy Sompal’s game whenever he takes to the field. As a bowling side, he will always be generating pace and terrorise the batsmen and pick up the wickets. He will put through all the paces to stop the ball from going across the boundary rope or plant a full stretch dive to take catch. And as a batting unit, he possesses both the skills of aggressor and an anchor.

With a haul of batsmen gone against a decent bowling side of Dindigul Dragons in a practice match in Chennai on Tuesday, Nepal never thought of racking up 216 runs on the board. But they would because with Sompal, a lot of things are possible with the bat when you underrate him only as a bowler.

Tuesday was special as Sompal played a gritty knock lifting Nepal from dire straits (85-6 in 24.2 overs) and guiding the team to 216-8 from stipulated 50 overs. He forged a 107-run match winning partnership with Basanta Regmi and in the process smashed four sixes and two boundaries to make 66 from just 77 deliveries.

Basanta was unbeaten for 56 in the game, the allrounder hitting two sixes and a four in 83 balls and with Sompal returning to pick up two wickets Dragons were folded for just 63 runs in 35.3 overs.

Nepal’s first of the four practice matches in Chennai revolved around Sompal who has once again given the assurance that the team can continued to count on him, as it has always done, as a batsman either.

As the ICC World Cricket League Championship matches against Hong Kong are going to be very crucial, its time for other batsmen especially those whose existence in the team is hanging by thread, need to step up and prove the metal.

If Sompal can come in and bat as a bowler, there is no point in giving spot to players who are making nuts and completing the squad.
