Former Indian all rounder Ravi Shastri has been appointed as
head coach of the Indian national cricket team. Likewise, Rahul Dravid former Captain who is
also the head coach of U19 and India A team has been appointed as
the batting consultant for overseas test series. Former Indian left handed fast bowler Zaheer Khan has also
been appointed as the bowling coach of Indian team.
It was believed that Shastri would apply for team India
coach after Anil Kumble resigned from the post after finishing second in ICC
Champions Trophy losing to arch rival Pakistan. Shastri has an experience of
working as director of team India
from August 2014 to him till 2016 . Under his tenure as Director India made
into the semifinals of 2015 World Cup and 2016 T20 World Cup.
It is was also
believed that as Shastri has good relation with Indian captain Virat Kohli and is
likely to appoint Shastri as the coach. At the end of Kumble’s tenure both
Kumble and Virat had cold relation which might open door to Shastri.
The announcement of
trio coaches and the consultant was made by BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC)
lead by former greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman on
Shastri was made coach
of Indian team over four other candidates which CAC had interviewed for the
role. Another four were, former Indian opening batsman Virendra Shewag, Tom
Moody, Richard Pybus and Lalchand Rajput.
Shastri, Dravid and Zaheer will join Indian team before heading towards Sri
Lanka for their first tour beginning on July 26.
