National cricket team middle order batsman Sharad Vesawkar has been declared the winner of the Special Award in the Pulsar Sports Awardon Wednesday.
The Sports Award is slated to be held at the Nepal Academy Hall on June 3 but Nepal Sports Journalists for the first time have decided to declare the award before the ceremony.
The winners of the Special, Lifetime Achievement and Para-athlete used to be declared directly during the ceremony in previous awards.
Legendary marathon runner Baikuntha Manandhar and taekwondo player Yadav Kunwar will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement and Parathlete awards respectively.
Sharad was instrumental in Nepal’s back to back successes in the international stage for the last 12 months. It was Sharad’s magical performance that helped Nepal qualify for its first ever ICC World Twenty20.
“It was a special moment when Sharad hit a six and a four when Nepal needed 13 run in the last over to qualify for the World Cup in the playoff quarter-final against Hong Kong during the Qualifiers in the UAE.It was nervous moment for everyone and Sharad did it. He is the real winner of this Award,” said NSJF Secretary and coordinator of the selection committee Prakash Timalsina during a press conference.
Sharad also hit a magical 20 runs in Nepal’s crucial game against Kenya — a chase of 183 runs — during the Qualifiers when Nepal needed 17 runs to win from the last over. His quickfire 43 runs also helped Nepal to finish third in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers — the biggest achievement for Nepal.
