Sandeep’s red hot form continues but Jamaica disappoint yet again

BY ANURAG SUBEDI

Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane kept getting better only to see his franchise Jamaica Tallawahs once again capitulate in a 19-run loss to table topper Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League on Tuesday.

Kiwi batsman Colin Munro smacked a 54-ball 69 as all six Trinbago batsmen chipped in with double figures leading the team to an imposing 184-4 in 20 overs. Having been a comparatively weaker side with the bat, Jamaica could only muster 165-6.

While Trinbago registered their seventh consecutive victory and stayed strong at the table with maximum 14 points, Tallawahs are fourth with six points from seven games.

Sunil Narine did the bulk of scoring with a 11-ball 29 while adding 32 runs for the first wicket with Lendl Simmons. Simmons (25) fell prey to Sandeep who yet again bowled economically returning the figures of 1-20 from four overs. On a day when every Tallawahs bowlers were hammered, only Sandeep and Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman (0-26) managed to contain the Trinbago batsmen.

Tallawahs could have restricted Trinbago below 160 but they leaked huge runs after skippe Kieron Pollard and Munro ran havoc in the closing stages. The duo put in 73 runs in last 34 deliveries to run riot. Pollard hit three sixes and a four in his 18-ball 33 not out. Munro’s innings consisted of 10 boundaries and a maximum.

Tallawahs were once again heading towards a low total at 97-6 in the 15th over before Andre Russell and Brathwaite gave some faint hope. They added 68 runs for the seventh wicket to at least earn some respectability to the total.

Russell stroked five fours and four sixes in his 23-ball 50 not out. Brathwaite was unbeaten on 21 off 16. Earlier, Glenn Philips scored 41 and Nkrumah Bonner contributed 26 runs in the chase. Philips and Bonner together contributed 64 runs for the third wicket.
