Sandeep spins Nepal to big victory

Leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane completed a seven-wicket haul as Nepal got off to a flying start in the ACC U-19 Eastern Region Tournament in Malaysia on Monday.

At the Club Aman grounds, Nepal hammered Thailand by 255 runs on the back of a solid performance from Sandeep.

An explosive innings from Anil Sah and a half century from Pranit Thapa Magar guided Nepal to 281-7 in 50 overs before Sandeep ripped through Thailand batting order shutting down their innings for just 26 runs in 10 overs.

After seamers Nandan Yadav and Kishor Mahato gave the early breakthroughs, former captain Sandeep stepped in and put the Thais under spin.

Sandeep returned the figures of 6-7 from just four overs, while skipper Dipendra Singh Airee also picked up one wicket for Nepal. Panasak Daenmalidoi top scored for Thailand with eight runs.

Nepal had a modest innings to their start after openers Sandeep Sunar and Aasif Sheikh (21) added 34 runs for the first wicket. Anil joined Sandeep at the crease and the duo added 60 runs for the second wicket.

Sandeep made 32 off 40 with three hits to the fence. Anil continued to play his shots and shared 52 runs for the third wicket with Dipendra.

Nepal lost Dipendra but Anil went on to make 91 runs from 74 balls with six boundaries and five sixes. After Anil’s departure, Pranit made sure Nepal close in on 300-run mark making exactly 50 from 61 balls with three fours and a maximum.

Rohit Kumar Paudel hit 28 from 30 with a six and a four, while Pawan Sarraf hit two sixes in his 19-ball 22. Prayuputh Sungnard took 3-61 and Daenmalidoi snared 2-60 from 10 overs.

Nepal are in Group ‘A’ of the tournament that serves as qualifiers for November’s ACC U-19 Asia Cup. Singapore and Bhutan are the other two team’s in Nepal’s group.
