Sagar allround display gets the better of Eastern

Sagar Pun starred with a fifer and plenty of runs as Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) crushed Eastern Region by nine wickets in their opening match of the Prime Minister’s Cup on Tuesday.

Electing to field first, Sagar took 5-16 from nine overs as TAC, strengthened by the inclusion of young spinners Sushan Bhari Shrestha and Shahab Alam, dismissed Eastern Region for a paltry 103 runs in 32.3 overs.

After the dismissal of opener Mahesh Chhetri in the first over for duck, Sagar joined Anil Mandal at the centre and the two shared an unbeaten 106-run partnership for the second wicket leading TAC to 107-1 in 18.4 overs.

Anil lit up the opening day of country’s highest cash prize tournament with a half century making 56 from 63 balls with eight boundaries. Sagar made 40 from 48 with three fours and a six. Mehboob Alam took the only TAC wicket to fall.

Earlier, an inexperienced Eastern squad failed to cope with a strong TAC batting line up losing wickets at regular intervals. Mehboob Alam top scored for them with a 42-ball 36 hitting three sixes and two boundaries before the allrounder lost his wicket to Sagar.

Opener Bidhan Goswami was their next best scorer making a 32-ball 19 hitting a six and a four, while Ankit Subedi (12) was the remaining batsman to cross double digits.

Apart from Sagar, Sushan also picked up three wickets but he was smashed for 32 runs in 4.3 overs when Mehboob looked ferocious. Seamer Sompal Kami also took 2-16 from nine overs in his miserly bowling show.
