Paras surprised over Aarif snub

National cricket team skipper Paras Khadka has shown surprise over the exclusion of talented all rounder Aarif Sheikh from the squad for the 17th Asian Games.

Aarif – a top performer from Nepal in the ACC U-19 Asia Cup held in January at the UAE – was ignored for the 19-man preliminary squad for the Asian Games. After winning the player-of-the-series award in the One Day National Tournament, the boy from Birgunj sneaked into the national team making his debut for the ACC Premier League in May.

Aarif impressed in the Premier League in Malaysia picking up four wickets from two matches and with a proper body language with the bat. He was, however, left out of the team for the Asian Games by the selection committee headed by former national cricketer Mosharraf Izahar, who is also from Birgunj.

“I really didn’t have any information about Aarif. I wonder why he was not there. He should have been in 19 and he could have even got into the final 15. I don’t know why he is not here,” Paras told

“He did very well in his debut tournament and should have been given continuity. After a lot time I was not consulted while selecting the players. Aarif is a very good prospect for Nepal,” said the Nepali skipper adding it still isn’t the end of the world for him.

“Nothing has been lost still. He is very young and has a long way to go. There is Division-III and many upcoming tournaments where he can prove himself.”
