Captain Paras Khadka played a captain’s knock as Nepal defeated the United Arab Emirates by five wickets in their first warm-up match of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers at the ICC Global Cricket Academy 2 in Dubai on Tuesday.
Electing to field first, Nepal restricted the Qualifiers host to a chaseable 138-7 in 20 overs. Paras then played a captain’s knock making 85 not out from 62 balls as Nepal chased down the target finishing at 142-5 with three balls to spare.
Sagar Pun hit the winning boundary to remain unbeaten on four. Nepal had lost Pradeep Airee (naught) with just four runs on the board and Subash Khakurel (14) was soon to go.
Paras and Gyanendra then combined for a 65-run stand for the third wicket to pull the team back into the game. Gyanendra made 25 off 30 with three boundaries.
Binod Bhandari (six) and Sharad Vesawkar (four) lost their wickets cheaply but Paras ensured the vicory with his scintillating innings.
Paras hit four sixes and nine boundaries in his innings. Nasir Aziz took three wickets for UAE. Earlier, skipper Khurram Khan led a lonely battle for UAE with a 55 off 40 that included six boundaries and a six.
Amjad Javed played a nine-ball cameo of 19, while Saqib Ali (18), Rohan Mustafa (16) and Mohammed Shafiq (12) also made runs in double figures.
Jitendra Mukhiya who debuted on the match took 3-30 in three overs, while Amrit Bhattarai, Paras, Basanta and Sagar also took one wicket apiece. Nepal will play the USA in another friendly match on Wednesday.
