Numbers not only the case for Arif

If you are taking numbers into consideration, Arif Sheikh stood tall among all Nepali batsmen in the ACC U-19 Asia Cup.

If its about positivity, Arif’s presence in the centre will make you believe. Arif, the 18-year old from Birgunj did all the hard work that everyone would have wanted to see.

Only talking about the matches against Pakistan and India, Arif has been the only one to bat with intensity that made him the highest run getter for Nepal in Dubai and Sharjah.

While every other batsmen in Dubai batted with submission, Arif landed from some other planet and opened his arms to answer every bowler with intensity.

A pull, rock-solid defense, cover drive and sweep shot, Arif has everything in his books. Arif collected 103 runs from the tournament and never missed out in any of the three matches in Nepal’s ACC U-19 Asia Cup campaign.

He was involved in four big partnerships for Nepal considering the situation that Nepal went into. From 127-4 against Pakistan, Aarif took Nepal to 167-5 against Pakistan in the first match with a 40-run stand with skipper Bhuwan Karki.

He made 25 from 34 with four boundaries in that match becoming the third highest scorer. Nepal were reeling at 61-5 against India and along with Bibhatsu he combined for a 64-run partnership in the second match where Arif made 40 off 62 with four boundaries.

And playing a match winning knock of 48 against UAE, Arif shared 41 with Raju Rijal and 40 with Bhuwan taking the team across the victory line.

Arif deserved a lot of applause against UAE when he moved his feet to slam two sixes and four boundaries.

Bhuwan was quietly impressed by what Arif has done in the tournament. “Arif batted with a very positive body language. There are some areas where he needs to take care of. But he has delivered for us in this tournament,” said Bhuwan.

Arif was prudent giving a delicate smile. “I am running with a good form and hopefully I can carry this throughout my playing days,” a smiling Arif told cricketingnepal.com with the man-of-the-match trophy after the match against UAE in Sharjah.
