NPL into hot water again

The Nepal Premier League has once again run into controversy after the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) said it is not aware of the tournament.

Zohra Sports Management (ZSM) has been organising the NPL with the Twenty20 event scheduled for March 26 to April 4 at the Tribhuvan University Stadium under new sponsors Wai Wai.

However, after the CAN top brass downplayed NPL’s existence, the tournament has once again run under controversy. ZSM had organised the 50-over event last year in Dhangadhi but before that it had to go through a series of controversy.

While a majority of governing council of NPL that combined of CAN officials decided to withdraw their support, it still went on after the now-suspended President Tanka Aangbuhang inaugurating the tournament and supporting it.

The 50-over event somehow went on with Panchakanya Tez — led by Sharad Vesawkar — winning the title, its title sponsor Ncell also withdrew the support. ZSM was not able to resume the tournament further due to international duty of national team cricketers and problems within the cricket governing body.

It finally signed CG Foods as the title sponsor but Friday’s development has once again created a confusing situation. “We don’t know anything about NPL,” said CAN Acting President Deepak Koirala.

“We heard that some private organization is holding the event but we don’t know about it. The ACC and ICC direct a country’s home board to organise its domestic league and we will do so from next year,” said Koirala adding CAN is not going to support NPL.

“We are not involved in Nepal and we will not lend any kind of support to it if it runs as Nepal Premier League. We will consider if it comes up with a changed name,” said Koirala.
