NPL back with new sponsors

Nepal Premier League (NPL), a tournament that created lot of buzz with its launching, is back with a new sponsor for its Twenty20 event.

Organisers Zohra Sports Management (ZSM) has tied up with CG Foods under the brand Wai Wai. The tournament will now be named Wai Wai NPL with the Twenty20 event beginning from March 26-April 4 at the Tribhuvan University Stadium.

Telecommunication giant Ncell had sponsored for the tournament initially with the 50-over format successfully held in Dhangadi and Kanchanpur in May last year. But after the tournament ran into controversy, Ncell decided to put its hands out.

Parallel, a busy international schedule of the Nepali cricket team had seen the NPL Twenty20 procrastinated repeatedly. The NPL consists of six franchises formed by different corporate houses of Nepal. In its first edition, ZSM had also planned a two-day event, originally slated for Dhangadi, before it was called off.

Panchakanya Tez – captained by national team middle order batsman and 50-over title winners –, Vishal Warriors, Jagdamba Giants, Colors X Factors, Kantipur Gurkhas and Sagarmatha Legends are the six teams in the tournament.

“I am thankful to CG Foods for joining hands with Nepal Premier League. CG Foods has always been supporting Nepali Cricket with earlier tie ups as well at U-19 level. NPL is going to be a different flavor altogether and I am sure we shall work closely to uplift the development of cricket in Nepal,” said Aamir Akhtar, ZSM Managing Director.

“Apart from a new sponsorship title, we are working on innovative things to entertain the crowd as it’s a free entry. There shall be lots of ground level activities with the crowd at the TU Stadium,” a release from ZSM read. ZSM will release the tie sheet in a due course.
