The newly recognised Region No 9 Mahendranagar has made a giant leap towards professionalism in domestic cricket when the region signed sponsorship deal for its four districts ahead of the Region Selection Twenty20 Cricket Tournament on Wednesday.
Kailali, Kanchanpur, Doti and Achham have been supported by local sponsors and will be seen with colourful jerseys wearing sponsors’ logo during the selection tournament which is beginning in Tikapur from Thursday, said Kailali and CAN member Dhirendra Saud during a programme in Dhangadhi.
SPA College have sponsored Kailali, Kanchanpur is supported by Sunrise School, Doti by Raika Tour and Travesl Pvt Ltd and Swaraj Tractors is the sponsor of Achham. All the four districts previously came under Region No 6 Baitadi. Mahendranagar was recognised as the new region splitting from Batiadi and got the approval from a General Assembly of cricket governing body recently.
Subash Bahadur Shahi, a cricket enthusiast and Mahendranagar official who has been working in the development of cricket in the Far-west Region, said the new region has set ambitious target of becoming the new national champions in five years.
“We are focused on the construction of an international standard cricket stadium apart from bringing professionalism in cricket. We are targetting to rope in players from the departmental regions to play from our region and become the national champions,” said Shahi.
