Nepali cricketers to play in Sri Lanka

Nepal’s explosive batsman Binod Bhandari, fast bowler Som Pal Kami, all rounder Sagar Pun and rising batsman Rajesh Pulami Magar are leaving for Sri Lanka on February 9 to compete in the Emerging Trophy Tournament.

The Emerging Trophy Tournament is a top tier three-day cricket tournament of Sri Lanka that will be played under round robin league format. Bhandari and Sompal will play for Kalutura Physical Culture Club (KPCC), while Sagar and Rajesh will join Kurunegala Sports Club.

Kurunegala is the same club against whom Nepal played a three-day match during its Division-II preparation tour of Sri Lanka in November last year.

Kurunegala were particularly impressed by Rajesh. “Rajesh was batting very well against  Kurunegala and he slammed 91 right in front of them,” recalled Dassanayake.

The four cricketer’s departure comes as coach Pubudu Dassanayake’s plans to give strength to his batting order ahead of the ICC World Cricket League Championship.

The Emerging Trophy Tournament is into its second month with four matches already played in the current season. Nepali cricketers will play the remaining six in the tournament.

“Although four matches have already gone by, their participation in rest of the matches along with training sessions during the weekends will be very crucial in bringing a lot of mental toughness in our batsmen,” Dassanayake told on Thursday.
