Nepal win but chances slim for qualification

Nepal registered their first victory in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Asia Qualifiers beating Malaysia by 33 runs at the Asian Institute of Technology grounds in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday.

Put in to bat first, a record opening wicket partnership between Jyoti Pandey and Sita Rana Magar helped Nepal post 108-6 in 20 overs. Karuna Bhandari then picked up three wickets as Malaysia were stopped at 75-7 in their 20.

It was Nepal’s first win in the tournament having lost the United Arab Emirates by five runs apart from two wash outs — against Thailand and Hong Kong.

In a tournament that sends the top two teams into the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Global Qualifiers in the Netherlands, Nepal’s chances have become even slimmer after UAE defeated Hong Kong in the other match of the day.

While Thailand put one foot into the Netherlands’ event after their third consecutive victory on Friday with a crushing win over China, UAE are also in a strong position to go through. Thailand lead the table with seven points and are followed by UAE on six points after the completion of fourth round matches.

Nepal now not only need to beat China with a huge margin in their final league game on Sunday but also pray for UAE’s unlikely defeat at the hands of Malaysia and expect Thailand to beat Hong Kong. Nepal have four points from four matches. Hong Kong, on five points, can qualify themselves if they beat Thailand with a good run rate on Sunday.

On Friday, Nepal headed towards a big total after Jyoti and Sita shared 66 runs for the first wicket. Sita made 37 from 42 deliveries with two boundaries and Jyoti collected 21 from 39. Kajol Shrestha (14) was Nepal’s next best scorer.

Malaysia had their opener Emyliya Eliani top scoring with 24 runs from 40 balls with three boundaries and Zayani Syamimi struck a run-a-ball 16 with two fours. Karuna, who also bowled a maiden, picked up 3-14 from four overs. Sonu Khadka, Sita, Nary Thapa and RItu Kanoujiya had one scalp apiece.
