Nepal remain in heels of UAE for Qualifier top spot

Nepal set up a virtual final for the top spot of the ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup Asia Qualifier easing to a six-wicket victory over Malaysia in Dubai on Friday.

On the back of three big consecutive victories, Nepal currently stay at the second spot with six points but remain in heels of leaders UAE in terms of net run rate.

In a round robin league tournament that guarantees the table toppers a spot in the ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup Global Qualifier, UAE have eight points with four consecutive wins.

Nepal, who were shocked by Hong Kong in their tournament opener, now need to defeat UAE in their final league match by a good margin to make sure they climb atop the table. UAE scored a big victory on Friday overhauling a target of 77 runs inside six overs against Kuwait.

In their match on Friday, Nepal restricted Malaysia to 92-7 before a 48-run second wicket stand between skipper Rubina Chhetri and her deputy Sita Rana Magar steered them home with 10 balls to spare.

Nepal lost Indu Barma (four) with 16 runs on the board before Rubina and Sita took the charge. Player-of-the-match Sita top scored with a 38-ball 30 hitting three boundaries and Rubina scored 29-ball 20.

Sarita Magar (15 not out) and Kabita Kunwar (10) also made runs in double figures of Nepal.

Earlier, Elsa Hunter did the majority of scoring for Malaysia scoring 39 off 48 balls with four boundaries. Sabnam Rai took two wickets for Nepal, while Kabita, Rubina and Sita also had one scalp apiece.
