Nepal out of title contention in Thailand

Nepal’s misery against big teams continued as they lost to China by 69 runs in the ACC Women’s Premier that shut them the chances of finishing at least second in the round-robin league tournament.

China and Thailand won both of their fourth matches in a row before the encounter between the top two teams on February 18 decide the tournament champions and runners-up. Nepal had also lost against Thailand by eight wickets and will now take on Hong Kong at the Prem Oval on Monday. Nepal and Hong Kong both have four points from four matches.

China made 159-8 after they elected to bat first and Nepal in reply were 90 all out in 36.1 overs. Nepal were hit hard early in their chase losing Sita Rana Magar (three) before Neera Rajopadhyaya — promoted up the order after back to back failures from the openers — and Sarita Magar added 25 runs for the second wicket.

Sarita was dimissed for seven runs. Neera hit two boundaries on her way to make 16 from 34 balls before losing her wicket to Yu Miao. Mamta Thapa (seven) and Karuna Bhandari tried to resist with a 24-run stand for the fourth wicket until Zhou Haijie trapped her leg before.

Karuna was next to depart for 15 off 35 hitting two fours. Nepal then kept on losing their wicket at regular wickets and the whole team was dismissed even before it reached triple figures. It was Nepal’s second consecutive loss at the hands of China.

Mamta Chaudhary (11) was their next best scorer. Han Lili and Miao took three wickets each for China.

Earlier, Nepal had a dream start when Sonu Khadka trapped Sun Mengyao leg before for a second-ball duck but modest contributions from the remaining Chinese batswomen took them to a strong position.

Zhang Mei made 31 off 57 hitting three boundaries and Liu Xiaonan scored 26 from 65 balls hitting two fours. Saraswoti Chaudhary and Karuna Bhandari picked up two wickets each for Nepal. Rubina and Sita also had one scalp apiece.
