Nepal lose to Afghans, again

Nepal lost their second practice match against Afghanistan by 41 runs losing the two-match friendly series 2-0 in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Nepal had also lost the first match by 83 runs at the same ground on Monday.

Electing to bat first, Afghanistan rode on a half century from Shamshur Rahman who also forged a match-winning 86-run partnership with Tariq Stanikzai taking the team to 212 all out in 49.5 overs. Nepal, in reply, were skittled out for 171 in 41.3 overs.

Nepali middle order failed to cash in on a decent 48-run opening wicket partnership between Sunil Dhamala and Sandeep Sunar (17). Zia-Ur-Rehman took the first three Nepali wickets to fall reducing them to 75-3.

Yogendra Karki (15) also partnered with Sunil for a 27-run partnership for the second wicket before becoming the second victim of Rehman who also removed Shankar Rana in consecutive balls.

Sunil was next to go for 45 followed by Raju Rijal (16) and Rajbir Singh (one), both dismissed by Zahir Pakteen as Nepal’s scores read 106-6. Sunil hit six fours and a six in 59 balls.

Aarif Sheikh and Dipendra Airee (23) kept Nepal’s hopes alive with a 37-run seventh wicket partnership but once the former was trapped leg before wicket by Shamshur, the collapse resumed. Aarif made 28 off 42 with two boundaries.

Rehman finished with the figures of 3-37 from 8.3 overs, while Karim Janat also had two scalps.

Earlier, two wickets each from Dipesh Shrestha and Nandan Yadav reduced Afghanistan to 35-4 before Shamshur and Tariq rebuilt the innings. Tariq made 37 from 60 balls hitting three fours and a six but his run out dismissal mattered little to the Afghans with Shamshur still going strong.

Shamshur made 75 off 128 hitting eight boundaries before falling to Kushal Bhurtel at 160-6. Waheed Shafaq (30) and Parwiz Malikzai (15) took the team across 200 runs. Kushal took 3-41 from 8.5 overs.

Nepal will now return from their preparation tour of India on January 16. Nepal, preparing for the January 22 to February 14 U-19 World Cup, will meet India, New Zealand and Ireland in Group ‘D’ when the youth World Cup kicks off in Bangladesh.
