Nepal made a triumphant start in the first International Wheelchair Twenty20 cricket tournament with a nine-wicket rout of Bangladesh on Thursday.

Electing to field first at the TU Stadium, Nepal restricted Bangladesh to 77-9 after man-of-the-match Bipin Paudyal picked up four wickets. The hosts then reached 78-1 in just 13 overs after openers laid the foundation for victory.

Digam Chemjong Limbu and Nabin Rai gave a decent start to Nepal adding 62 runs for the first wicket. Nabin made 16 from 24 balls with a boundary. Digam and Jung Bahadur Thapa (11 not out) then led the team victory. Digam made 35 from 46 with three boundaries.

Earlier, Nepal affected three run outs early in the game to put Bangladesh on backfoot. Their opener Sazad Hossain made 16 from 29 deliveries with three boundaries, while four of the first six batsmen failed to open the account.

Bipin took 4-11 from four overs and Yam Bahadur Thapa picked up 2-2 from four overs. Both bowlers bowled two maiden overs each. Mohammad Ripon Uddin top scored for Bangladesh making 18 from 15 with four boundaries, while Mohammad Mohidul Islam also chipped in 16 from 34 hitting three boundaries.

Nepal will now meet India in Friday’s second match after Bangladesh play India in the first. The top two teams after the round robin league will reach the final.
