Triton International College upset local crowd to win the first KU Cup Inter University Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Kathmandu University (KU) grounds in Dhulikhel on Sunday.
In the final that was postponed for a week due to rain and other technical problems, Triton defeated hosts KU by 25 runs. Batting first, equal contribution from the batsmen saw Triton pile a formidable 168-8 in 20 overs. KU had their answer but their innings ultimately folded at 143-9.
Indra Kamal Manandhar (2-25) and Sanjay Shrestha (2-30) shared four wickets between them for Triton, while Ritesh Singh had one scalp. Raunak Jung Pandey played some delightful strokes before losing his wicket for 32 off 26 that included one boundary and a six.
Raj Timalsina made 19 off 18 with three hits to the fence and one over, while Krishna Bista (18) and Pawan Nepal (17) were other KU batsmen to make runs in double figures.
Earlier, man-of-the-final Suman Uday led the foundation for Triton making a composed 39 off 49 balls. Suman’s innings included five boundaries. Ujjwal Thapa and Bijay Gautam gave a fair contribution of 29 runs each.Ujjwol hit three boundaries and two sixes in 18 balls and Bijaya’s 20-ball innings included two boundaries and as many sixes.
Ritesh dealt a late damage to KU hammering 28 in a 13-ball cameo. Ritesh hit four hits to the rope and one maximum. Pragyesh Dhungel was the pick of the KU bowlers with the figures of 3-31 from four overs, while Saurav Thapa took two wickets.
Along with the title, Triton grabbed a purse of Rs 51,000 and runners-up KU got Rs 30,000. Krishna Bista of KU was declared the player-of-the-tournament that earned him Rs 11,000. Indra Kamal was the best bowler and Rabin Joshi of Triton took the best batsman honour. Both of them received Rs 9,000 apiece.
