The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has decided to send batsman Mahesh Chhetri and medium pace bowler Jitendra Mukhiya Sri Lanka to join the national team in the island country as a cover.
Nepali team is currently in Sri Lanka on a 15-day tour to prepare for the ACC Emerging Teams Cup. Three current national team members that include skipper Paras Khadka have been frequently hit by injuries but CAN General Secretary Ashok Pyakurel said the duo are leaving Sri Lanka not as replacement for anyone.
“We have Qualifiers in our mind and their inclusion in the team is to prepare a bigger pool before we play Qualifiers. More than Emerging Teams Cup, we are focused on Qualifiers,” Pyakurel told cricketingnepal.com.
After the August 17-25 ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Singapore, Nepal will compete in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers in November at the UAE before leaving New Zealand for the 2015 ICC World Cup Qualifier slated for January next year.
“Some of the players have been suffering injuries but everything is okay right now. Only if anyone ends up being unavailable for ACC Emerging Teams Cup due to injury, we can consider playing two of them. But for the time being, they are only covers and fall under our plan to prepare a big and strong pool for the Qualifiers,” said Pyakurel.
Mahesh and Jitendra were axed from the preliminary 22-member squad for the Emerging Teams Cup. Mahesh was called up in the preliminary camp after four years, while Jitendra is a former U-19 bowler and is yet to find a place in the national team.
Paras has so far not recovered from his shoulder injury he sustained after ICC World Cricket League Division-III in Bermuda held in May, while Pradeep Airee had twisted his ankle during the Sri Lankan U-23 League. He was suggested to take a 14-day rest. Another opener Subash Khakurel has also been hit by injuries frequently.
