Brutal hitting from Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya leads Mumbai Indians to their second victory in the Indian Premier League on Thursday as Kings XI Punjab lose their third match.
At the Sheikh Zayed Stadum in Abu Dhabi, Mumbai managed to reach an imposing 191-4 after Pollard and Pandya added 67 runs in the last 23 deliveries. Punjab never got the partnership they needed once they lost opener Mayank Agarwal (25) with 38 runs on the board before they were restricted to 143-8 in 20 overs.
Agarwal, the centurion in Punjab’s previous match, added 38 runs for the first wicket with skipper KL Rahul (17). Nicholas Pooran did the most of the scoring in his 41-run stand with Glenn Maxwell (11) and with his departure Punjab wilted under pressure.
Pooran made 44 off 27 hitting three fours and two sixes. Rahul Chahar, Jaspreet Bumrah and James Pattinson took two wickets each for Mumbai.
Earlier, Sheldon Cottrell had a terrific start for Punjab with a wicket maiden that included the dismissal of Quinton de Kock. Surya Kumar Yadav (10) didn’t last long before skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan (28) added 62 runs for the third wicket.
Sharma took time to reach his half century before accelerating the innings. He made 70 off 45 with eight fours and three sixes. The major damage was done by Pollard and Pandya after they collected huge amount of runs in the last four overs.
Pollard struck four sixes and three fours in his 20-ball 47, while Pandya chipped in 30 off 11 with three fours and two sixes.
