Kathmandu win regional selection title

Kathmandu bowlers put on a sensational bowling display to claim the Wai Wai U-19 Regional Selection Cricket Tournament for Region-III (Kathmandu) at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds on Thursday.

Kathmandu made 153-8 in a match that was reduced to 30 overs a side. Kathmandu had four points before the completion of the match with Lalitpur on six points and to topple their last league match opponents they needed to win by a margin of 46 runs.

The bowlers then did a fine job restricting Lalitpur to just 105 runs in 29.3 overs, thus winning by a margin of 48 runs and topple the former on net run rate. Nuwakot also had six points but they finished the campaign third on inferior run rate.

Electing to bat first, Jagat Chhetri’s 41-ball 42 and Jitendra Singh’s 31-ball 27 lifted Kathmandu beyond the 150-run mark. Jagat hit six boundaries, while Jitendra’s watchful innings included two hits to the fence.

Arjun Adhikari chipped in 25 off 36 with two boundaries, while Ashish Dhami smashed 18 off 19 with four fours and Puran BK also made 19. Dilip Yadav (3-27) and Pritam Thapa (2-32) were the pick of the Lalitpur bowlers. Ashirwad Baral and Aayush Thapa also had one scalp apiece.

Aashish Pokhrel ripped through the Lalitpur batting order in reply picking up 4-10 from six overs and he was ably supported by Bishal Babu Adhikari who took 3-21 from his six. Jitendra, Krishna Adhikari and Diwash Baral had one victims each.

Adil Khan offere some resistance for Lalipur making 27 off 38 with three fours and six, while Pramod Yadav made 15 off 18 with one six and a four. Milan Thapa (12), Dilip Yadav (11) and Nandan Yadav (11) were other Lalitpur batsmen to reach double figures.

Abiraj Yadav of Nuwakot was named the man-of-the-series, while Pramod and Nandan were declared the best batsmen and bowler respectively. Chaudhary Group General Manager AK Dubedi, Acting GM Lal Babu Adhikari and Cricket Association of Nepal acting teasurer Diwakar Ghale handed over the prizes.
