Kathmandu, Lalitpur win opener

Kathmandu and Lalitpur opened the Senior Regional Twenty20 Selection Tournament for Region No 3 Kathmandu with victories at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds on Friday.


In two contrasting matches of the day, Kathmandu edged Bhaktapur by nine runs and Lalitpur crushed Tribhuvan University (TU) by nine wickets.


Batting first, Kathmandu made 116-6 and with Bhaktapur safely cruising towards victory, they were stopped at 107-8 in their 20 overs. Purushottam Jha gave a reall scare to Kathmandu at the end of their innings with quick-fire 26 off just 11 balls but Bhaktapur ultimately fell short.


Anil Karki made 21 of 36 and Sumit Maharjan scored 20 off 26 with both batsmen hitting two boundaries each. Prafulla Vaidya and Arpan Kafle took two wickets each for Kathmandu with Som Pal Thapa, Nabin Pradhan and Niraj Basnet picking up one wicket apiece.


Earlier, Bibhatsu Thapa top scored for Kathmandu with 24 runs from 35 balls and Suman Uday scored 20 off 26. Both the leading scorers hit two fours each. Man-of-the-match Som Pal played a cameo of 8-ball 18 hitting three boundaries and Arjun Adhikari struck 10 not out.


Abhay Poudel took two wickets for Bhaktapur, while Anil, Prakash Bista and Nafeez Sheikh had one victims each.


In the second match, man-of-the-match Dipankar Yonjan picked up three wickets and was ably supported by Prabin Shakya (2-6) and Nashim Akhtar (2-31) as Lalitpur packed up TU for just 75 runs in 14.4 overs. Kamal Sapkota and Ujjwal Thapa also took one wicket apiece for Lalitpur.


Uttam Bhatt, Amrit Acharya and Amir Akhtar made 10 runs each for TU and Sudeep Sharma made eight off 14. Lalitpur lost their opener Ujjwal for just 10 runs but Suraj KC and Sujan Maharjan gave a clinical finish to take the team to 76-1 12.1 overs.


Sruaj made 32 off 27 with two sixes and as many fours and Sujan made a patient 25 off 34 balls with one boundary. Amir Akhtar took the only Lalitpur wicket to fall.
