Karan shows rare talent with bat in Pokhara victory

Region-VIII (Pokhara) earned a consolation victory to sign off from the Senior One Day National Cricket Tournament at the TU Stadium on Tuesday.


In a Group ‘A’ dead rubber, Pokhara defeated Region-VII (Janakpur) by 89 runs condemning the latter to the fifth consecutive defeat in a pool from where Tribhuvan Army Club and Region-II (Birgunj) have already progressed to the last four. Pokhara finished with two victories from five matches.


Karan KC showed his prowess with the bat as Pokhara reached a huge 272-6. Janakpur were bundled out for just 183 runs in 41.2 overs. Hari Shankar Sah top scored for Janakpur with 58 off 62 hitting 11 boundaries. Sah’s 56-run stand for the third wicket with Raj Mohammad (16) was the only bright spot for Janakpur.


Himansu Dutta (21) was their next best scorer. Sushil Kandel picked up 4-32 from 10 overs for Pokhara with Santosh Upadhyaya taking 3-22 from seven.


Pokhara were 146-5 in 36.3 overs before Karan, a national team frontline seamer, smashed Janakpur bowlers all over the park sharing 96 runs for the sixth wicket with Nischal Pandey (24).


He continued to play his shots and combined for an unbeaten 40 runs partnership with with Dipesh Shrestha (seven not out).


Karan smashed smashed nine boundaries and five sixes in his 55-ball 89. Bidhan Shrestha was Pokhara’s next best scorer making 36 off 81 with five boundaries. Santosh Neupane (28), Aakash Thapa (26), Sudip Paudel (16) and Sanjosh Bhattarai (12) also made runs in double figures.


Rahul Pratap Singh, Sushant Mandal, Gopal Singh, Raj and Chandan Jha picked up a wicket each for Janakpur. Opener Sunil Dhamala (25), Binod Lama (24 not out), Lalit (24), Bhim Sarki (21) and Roman Bam (20) also contributed to the total. Apart from Saurav, Bishnu Pandey also picked up three wickets for Bhairahawa.
