Wushu player Jharana Gurung of Pokhara has become Nepal’s most Popular Player of the Year award with a landslide vote in the Pulsar Sports Award.
Jharana earned 71,806 votes — a mammoth compared to the 9,502 votes earned by national cricket team skipper Paras Khadka. Swimming prodigy Sirish Gurung was the surprise second place finisher with 14, 560 votes.
The Popular PoY was declared following the SMS votes and facebook likes the nominees received. Facebook likes — which four likes was equivalent to one SMS — was practiced for the first time by NSJF.
Apart from Paras and Sirish, Jaharana was distant winner getting the better of Keshari Chaudhary of athletics and Jagjit Shrestha of football.
Paras — also a nominee in the Player of the Year (Male) — was at the centre of Nepali sports throughout the year with the 26-year old winning everyone’s hearts handing Nepal back-to-back international tournaments and that too leading by an example with his own performance.
Jharana won a bronze during the 13 Asian Wushu Championships that was held in Vietnam. Her third place finish in Vietnam brought an 18-year medal drought for Nepali wushu in Asian level tournaments. She was also named the Kaski Player of the Year.
