Janakpur claim U-19 Women’s title

Mamta Chaudhary and Anuradha Chaudhary produced a match-winning partnership to hand Region No 7 (Janakpur) their second Wai Wai Women’s U-19 National Tournament title on Friday.

At the Tribhuvan University Stadium, Janakpur defeated Region No 1 (Biratnagar) by 27 runs to win their second title after winning the tournament in 2011. Janakpur made 131-3 before they restricted Biratnagar to 104-7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Mamta and Anuradha’s partnership was the cornerstone in Janakpur’s victory specially after they lost their key performer Shanti Chaudhary for a duck. Mamta and Anuradha then stitched 97-run stand for the second wicket to put Janakpur in a driving seat.

Anuradha made 33 off 55 with four boundaries before losing her wicket to Sanjana Budhathoki. Mamta was next to go for 55 off 50 with eight boundaries but her loss mattered less to Janakpur with Saraswoti Chaudhary lifting them to a competitive total.

Saraswoti chipped in 23 off 13 with three boundaries. Sabnam Rai picked up the wickets of Shanti and Mamta.

Defending champions Biratnagar never settled in their chase once they lost opener Roshna Rai (naught) with just two runs on the board. They were quickly reduced to 20-3 but Sangita Rai kept them in the hunt with two mediocre partnerships.

Sangita shared 22 runs with Sanjana (five) and 26 with Gita Prasai (five) but once she was dismissed by Aarati Chaudhary, Biratnagar’s struggle resumed. Sangita top scored for Biratnagar with 32 off 40 hitting two boundaries.

Roma Thapa was left stranded on 24 off 30 with one hit to the fence. Aarati picked up two wickets for Janakpur, while Saraswoti, Anuradha and Mamta also had one scalp apiece.
