India end world cup hoodoo against South Africa

India changed the course of their history defeating pre tournament favourites South Africa by a massive 130 runs.


On the way to register their second consecutive victory, India ended their South African hoodoo on the back of a fine century from opener Shikhar Dhawan. India made 307-7 in 50 overs before bundling out South Africa for just 177 runs in 40.2 overs.


It was India’s first ever victory against the Proteas in the World Cup against a team whom they have never defeated in the World Cup. Dhawan’s 137 is also the highest ever score posted against South Africa in the World Cup.


Dhawan was the architect of India’s histocial victory who was invovled in two century partnerships that helped India post a challenging total. If it was Dhawan with the bat, then it was Mohit Sharma with the ball picking up two wickets and affecting one crucial run out of South African skipper AB de Villiers.


South Africa were still in the game when de Villiers added 68 runs for the third wicket with Faf Du Plessis but Sharma’s run out of de Villiers turned the tide to India’s favour.


Du Plessis top scored for South Africa making 55 off 71 with five boundaries. De Villiers was their next best scorer with 30 off 38 that included two boundaries. Opener Hashim Amla and David Miller made 22 each with both batsmen hitting two fours apiece.


R Ashwin picked up 3-41 from three overs, while Mohammed Sami also picked up two wickets. Ravindra Jadeja also picked up a wicket for India.


Earlier, India lost opener Rohit Sharma (duck) early after a perfect throw from de Villiers ran the batsman out. Dhawan then shared 127 for the second wicket with Virat Kohli, who was out for 46 off 60 with three boundaries.


Dhawan carried his innings with some blistering shots and added another defining 127 runs with Ajinkya Rahane that was enough for India to get the better of the Proteas. Dhawan, who upped the ante after completing his cenutry, made 137 off 146 with 16 boundaries and two sixes.


Rahane clobbered three sixes and seven boundaries in his 60-ball 79. Skipper MS Dhoni made 18 off 11 with three boundaries down the order. Morne Morkel picked up two wickets fo South Africa, while Inran Tahir, Wayne Parnell and Dale Steyn had one scalp apiece.
