The Nepali fans expectation to watch Nepali players play against Indian batting star Gautam Gambhir has fizzled out as the Southpaw is confirmed to not playing in any of the practice matches during Nepal’s New Delhi tour.
The High Performance Programme (HPP) earlier had told reporters that Gambhir will be leading one of the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) teams playing against Nepal during their Delhi tour but it is not to happen.
HPP Manager Purna Lama told cricketingnepal.com on Sunday that Gambhir has not been released by his state team owing to domestic duties. “Yes we had a chat about Gambhir with DDCA officials but we were told that he could not be released at this point of time. So there are no possibilities of Gambhir playing against us,” said Lama.
Nepali fans were excited to hear about Gambhir playing against Nepal and it was one of the most talked of issue in fan pages of social networking sites.
Nepal rather got to play against three DDCA U-25 teams winning two and losing one against them. Nepal also played two matches against Railways-XI on Friday and Saturday winning both of them. They are now scheduled to play two matches against Invitational-XI and three more.
Nepal are currently in New Delhi to play practice matches against Indian teams to prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers. The Delhi tour comes as a part of agreement the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) recently signed with the DDCA.
Lama, meanwhile, also informed the teams to be played against after finishing two matches against Invitational-XI are going to be even tougher compared to the previous ones.
