Faltering Janakpur lucky to qualify

Region No 7 (Janakpur) demonstrated their prowess when they stunned Region No 1 (Biratnagar) in the opening day of the Wai Wai U-19 Women’s National Cricket Tournament. But as the tournament’s final league round ended on Wednesday, they followed Biratnagar as runners-up to enter the semi-finals.

An inconsistent Janakpur on Wednesday crashed to a shocking eight-wicket defeat to Region No 3 (Kathmandu) but still managed sneak through. Biratnagar, Janakpur and Kathmandu were tied on four points each after final league stage and the latter were knocked out.

Janakpur’s fall was the highlight of the day as they made 100-3 in 20 overs. In a Group ‘A’ that ultimately turned to be a group of death, Kathmandu signed off impressively when Jyoti Pandey’s enterprising half century guided them to 101-2 in 17 overs.

Jyoti made 61 not out off 53 balls with six boundaries and she dealt with Kathmandu’s chase perfectly despite losing her opening partner Sandhya KC for a duck. Jyoti shared a match-winning 81-run stand for the second wicket with Rabina Bhandari as Kathmandu raced to victory with three overs to spare.

Rabina was out for 29 off 42 hitting four boundaries and when she was dismissed, Kathmandu were just seven runs away from victory. Anuradha Chaudhary picked up one wicket for Janakpur who earlier were indebted to Mamta Chaudhary for reaching triple figures.

Mamta made 37 not out from 34 ball with three boundaries and shared 38 runs for the third wicket with Sarswati Chaudhary (12). Anuradha also contributed with the bat making 23 off 38 with two fours. Sushma Shrestha and Sajani Shrestha picked up a wicket each for Kathmandu.
