England on top as Root makes 184* on debut as captain

As captain Joe Root played
not out 184 innings in his debut match captain England managed to make 357 runs
after the first day’s play in spite of bad start in the first test match
against South Africa at Lord’s cricket ground on Thursday.

England lost four
wickets in 22.3 runs, making just 76 runs after captain Root won the toss and
elected to bat first.

England lost former
captain Alastair Cook (four), Keaton Jennings (eight), Gary Ballance (20) and
wicket-keeper batsman Jonny Bairstow (10) within 22 overs, but Root and Ben
Strokes, who made 56 runs added 114 runs for the 5th wicket to lift their team.

Root, who played 227
balls with 26 fours and one six also added 161 runs with all-rounder Moeen Ali for
sixth wicket who is not out on 61 runs from 105 balls after the end of day one
play.

Out of 87 overs bowled
by South African bowler on day one Vernon Philander, who was fit to play just
before this test match after passing a fitness test for his ankle injury
took
three wickets in his 16 overs conceding 46 runs.  

Apart from Philander,
Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada took one wicket each.
