Dharamshala Wrap: More job to be done by Nepali young brigade

Nepali
U-19 squad has just completed their Dharamshala tour in a bid to prepare
for the U-19 World Cup and are now in New Delhi where they
will play two
more practice matches against the youth team of
Afghanistan.

Nepal has
to thank BCCI and its Secretary Anurag Thakur for managing the smooth
tour for Nepali boys who have, no doubt, gained a
much-needed exposure
ahead of the big show in Bangladesh. And what went in
Dharamshala on-the-field deserves an applause.

Nepal played three matches against Himanchal
Pradesh Cricket Academy
(HPCA) XI winning two of them. But more than
boasting about the end-result, the performance from Nepali boys are worth
a talk. The biggest worries for Nepal has been the batting department,
particularly opening order. Out of the three matches, Nepal’s biggest opening
wicket partnership was nine between Sandeep Sunar and Sunil Dhamala
in the second game.

While in both remaining two mathes, Nepal had
lost their openers
without getting a single run on the board. Sunil did
suggest that he can bat in the top order after slamming a scintillating
86-ball century in the third match, but Nepal’s wait for a fine start in
the top order is still not over.

The biggest positive for Nepal is skipper Raju
Rijal’s fine form. Raju
consistently performed in all three matches and
made a fine 66 off 84 in the first match that Nepal lost narrowly by two
wickets. He also scored 45
in the second and 26 unbeaten on final game.

Nepal lower middle order forged by Aarif
Sheikh, Saurav Khanal and
Dipendra Airee has been an asset for the team
and their performance will much depend on how they fare in the practice
matches in the build up to the
World Cup.

Aarif, Saurav and Dipendra have also been
delivering as the bowlers
and a strong spinning attack led by Sandeep
Lamichhane, Sushil Kandel and Prem Tamang will have a much work to do
when Nepal take to the field in coming week.
