Region No 9 (Dhangadhi) ended their Wai Wai U-19 National Tournament campaign on a high defeating Region No 2 (Birgunj) by five wickets on Sunday.
With both teams already crashing out from Group ‘B’, the match at the Army grounds in Bhaktapur was a battle of pride and Dhangadhi restored it after a disappointing display in their first two matches.
Birgunj — who went on to lose their third match with only the washed out match against Region No 6 (Baitadi) on Saturday earning them one point — were 112 all out in 41.2 overs. Dhangadhi reached 113-5 in 29.4 overs with a composed innings from Raju Rijal.
Dhangadhi were 21-2 in six overs losing opener Sunil Dhamala (eight) and Bhim Sarki (nine). Raju then shared 45 runs for the third wicket with Sundeep Jora. Jora made 23 off 47 with three fours. Dhangadhi then lost Jora and new man Lalit Bam (one) in a space of nine runs.
Raju, however, kept his calm sharing another 30 runs with Dipendra Airee taking the team close to victory. Airee made 20 off 26 with two hits to the fence and he was dismissed Dhangadhi were just seven runs shy of victory.
Raju made 45 off 68 with three fours and a six. Irshad Ahmed took 2-33 from 10 overs, while Rashid Khan, Pawan Sharraf and Rijan Dhakal had one scalp apiece.
Birgunj innings revolved around Aasif Sheikh and his two partnerships that helped them cross triple figures. From 27-4 in 15 overs, Aasif partnered with Nasruddin Ansari (20) for a 38-run stand and Rashid (21) for a 40-run partnership.
Birgunj lost their last four wickets for just three runs with Aasif falling to Dipendra Airee in the 39th over. Aasif made 46 off 92 with three boundaries.
Man-of-the-match Arjun Chapagain picked up 4-19 off 5.2 overs and Sunil took 3-27 from 10 overs. Dipendra also starred with the ball picking up 2-17 from 10 and Naresh Bohora had one scalp.
