Dassanayake hails Asia Cup opportunity

National cricket team coach Pubudu Dassanayake said the opportunity for Associate teams to compete in the upcoming Asia Cup/s will be a stepping stone in Nepal’s bid to become one of the top teams among the non-Test playing countries.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), which is now taking over the development works of Asia scrapping the Asian Cricket Council from July 26, has come up with a radical change in the Asia Cup making it a Twenty20 event and allowing one or two Associate teams in the regional showpiece. Nepal can fancy a chance to play against the likes of Test playing nations India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualifying for the Asia Cup through a qualifying round. Dassanayake hailed the opportunity. “It’s another good opportunity for us to play against Full Members,” Dassanayake told from Canada where he is currently on a leave. “Our vision is to be No 1 team among the Associates. If we get more opportunities like this and play against Afghanistan and Ireland, it will help the process,” said the coach.
