Clinical NPC cruise to victory

Nepal Police Club (NPC) produced a clinical display on a back of solid bowling performance from spinner Sushil Kandel to cruise past Far-Western Region by seven wickets in their first match of the Prime Minister Cup One-Day National cricket tournament.

Electing to field first in the Group ‘B’ game at the TU grounds, Sushil’s 5-21 from 10 overs squeezed out Far West for just 170 runs in 48.4 overs. Amit Shrestha and Dilip Nath did the rest with a century partnership as NPC replied with 172-3 from 24.3 overs.

NPC lost Amit’s opening partner Shankar Rana (duck) for just seven runs but the early delight was soon ruled out by Amit and Dilip who took the game away from Far West with a 128-run second wicket partnership.

Amit did most of the scoring in the match-winning partnership making 75 from 63 balls with eight fours and three sixes before losing his wicket to Bhim Sarki. Dilip was next to go for 40 off 50 with fours boundaries and a six but by then the game was all but over for Far West.

Dipendra Singh Airee smashed a 19-ball 27 not out with six boundaries as NPC won the game in a flash. Aarif Sheikh was unbeaten on eight from seven balls and sealed the game with a boundary.

Earlier, Far west were restricted to 38-3 in 11.5 overs with only Roshan Nepali (21) showing some grit from the top orders. Gyanendra Kunwar and Bhim shared 69 runs for the fourth wicket to push their side towards a respectable total.

Bhim made 28 from 52 balls with two fours before he was dismissed by a direct hit from Kushal Bhurtel. Gyanendra was next to go for 49 off 88 with five boundaries. Santosh Bhatta was next best scorer for Far West making 25 off 35 with a six.

Sushil returned the figures of 5-21 from 10 overs with a maiden and Lalit Singh Bhandari took 3-25 from 8.4 overs.
