Chandra stars in CAN-XI victory

Nepal’s CAN-XI got off to a winning start in the 31st All India Uttarakhand Gold Cup Cricket Tournament defeating Uttarakhand-XI by two wickets at the Rangers Cricket Ground in Dehradun on Sunday.


CAN-XI – led by former U-19 skipper Prithu Baskota – bundled out Uttarakhand for 188 after they elected to bat first in the 40-over-a-side match. Naresh Budhayer shaped the team’s victory with a half century but Nepal had to survive a late scare before reaching the target with three balls to spare. 


Nepal lost opener Pradeep Airee (naught) with just 10 runs on the board but Naresh and Anil Mandal anchored Nepali innings with a 50-run partnership.


Anil was dismissed for 29 and after Sagar Pun lost his wicket, Nepal were troubled at 93-3 in 24 overs. Binod Bhandari played some delightful strokes making 33 runs from 27 balls but after Binod’s dismissal at 134, the scores soon read 140-7 after Nepal also lost Naresh, Prithu, and Mahendra Chand in no time. 


Naresh made 54 off 76 deliveries before losing his wicket to Sunny Rana. Bhuwan Karki and Shakti Gauchan took Nepal close to the target before the former sealed the victory with a boundary. Bhuwan remained unbeaten on 22, while Shakti made 19. 


Earlier, from 75-0 after 15 overs, Uttarakhand suffered a mini collapse at 102-4. Some whirlwind knock from Ravi Bist took the local side to 163-4 in 29 overs with 220 seemingly possible total. 


Chandra Sawad then returned in his second spell and astonishing picked up five wickets from 3.3 overs giving away 16 runs. Chandra was declared the man-of-the-match for his figures of 5-36 from 7.3 overs. 


Shakti also picked up 3-30 from nine overs, while Sagar Pun also got one victim. Opener Kunal Chandela (47) was the other Uttarakhand batsman to impress from the home side.
