Chand chips in two million for local event

Tej Bahadur Chand – a social worker and entrepreneur – is investing more than two million rupees for Shuvakamana Cup, a local club-level tournament in Nepal’s Far-west district Baitadi.

The Shuvakamana Cup is in its seventh edition and Chand has been donating the entire fund for the tournament from the first. Chand – a resident for Baitadi – holds a Real State business in Mumbai India and has donated for many social causes.

The Shuvakamana Cup features more than 30 teams and Chand’s projected donation amount for the seventh edition is going to be almost Rs 2.5 million. The seventh Shuvakamana is beginning from October 16-25.

Melauli, Dehimandu and Sundarkhali will share the tournament with the former hosting the inauguration and closing ceremony. Kanchanpur are the defending champions and had defeated Baitadi in the previous edition.

The winners of the league-cum-knockout tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs 111,111 and the second and third place finishers will get Rs 51, 111 and Rs 25,111. The fourth placed team will also bag a consolation prize of Rs 15,111.

Talking to, Chand said it gives him immense pleasure to invest in cricket. “I still remember the first day of the first edition when many of us were unaware of cricket,” he said.

“We have been hosting the tournament at a place where even electricity has not reached. A majority were unknown about how cricket is played when we began organising it. Coming down to the seventh edition, we have a huge pool of team and equally thousands of spectators, it obviously gives a lot of pleasure,” said Chand.

Chand said he will invest more and will look to make the tournament even bigger in near future. Asked about the possibility of taking the departmental teams from the next edition, Chand said: “The venue itself is very far, so its difficult to manage everything. May be not now but in the future.”
