Nepal’s CAN-XI – also heading into the tournament as Nepal ‘A’ team – lost their opening match of the fourth All India Vizzy Memorial Cup Cricket Tournament match on Sunday.
Led by national team 50-over opener Anil Mandal, CAN-XI lost to Varanasi by a slim margin of 11 runs in a match reduced to 35-over-a-side.
Varanasi was restricted to a decent 175-9 in 35 overs before they stopped CAN-XI at 164-9.
Fazlur Rehman Khan struck a half century for the Nepali side but it was not enough to prevent his team from the opening defeat. Rajesh Pulami scored 30 and Anil made 24 from the top order. His opening partner Mahesh Chhetri (14) and Bhuwan Karki (10) was the remaining Nepali batsmen to make runs in double figures.
Earlier, seamers Chandra Sawad and Ram Naresh Giri picked up two wickets for CAN-XI, while Mehboob Alam, Aarif Sheikh, Raj Kumar Pradhan and Bhuwan took one wicket apiece.
