CAN finally prioritises WCLC

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has finally prioritized Nepal participation in the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) forming a preparation committee under the convenorship of its new acting president Deepak Koirala.

The decision from CAN’s board meeting came four days after the Legislature-Parliament summoned sports officials and CAN members to discuss on the development of the game and prospects on constructing international standard stadiums in the existing grounds.

The cricket governing body’s passiveness was specially under scrutiny after they were failing to address Nepal’s participation in the WCLC. Nepal are expected to host their first match of the WCLC – a 50-over home and away tournament to be played between eight countries for the next two years – at the end of April.

CAN Chief Executive Officer Bhawana Ghimire is the Member Secretary of the preparation committee, while national team coach Pubudu Dassanayake are also the members. CAN General Secretary Uttam Karmacharya, new treasurer Shailesh Kumar Chaudhary, a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and National Sports Council are also the members in the committee.

Among other decisions, the Men’s Nation One Day and Twenty20 Cricket Tournament has been scheduled for an March 8 start with the Inter-school National Girls’ Cricket Tournament to begin in Janakpur and Lahan from February 24.

Meanwhile, Jagat Tamatta has been named the coach for the boys U-19 team and Samson Jung Thapa is given the responsibility to look after the women’s national squad for the next one year.
