Birendra Multiple outshine Bhupendra half century to win title

Birendra Multiple Campus upstaged a heroic knock from Bhupendra Thapa to claim the title of the Martyrs Shiva Paudel Memorial Inter-college National Cricket Tournament in Bharatpur on Tuesday.

In a low scoring final, Birendra Memorial of Bharatpur registered a slim two-run victory over Heartland School of Kathmandu where Sonu Tamang’s quickfire knock spoke in volumes. Invited to bat first, Birendra Memorial made 120 from 20 overs before stopping Heartland at 108-9.

The title made Birendra Multiple richer by Rs 168,902 and Heartland took Rs 135,202. Bhupendra had a sad story who scored 56 off 55 balls and won the man-of-the-match but not the final for his side. Bhuwan Karki (11 off 10) was the only other Heartland batsman to reach double figures.

Amit Singh and Mehboob Alam picked up two wickets each for Birendra Multiple with Bishwajit Arun and Prakash Bista taking one each.

Earlier, Sonu hammered four sixes and one boundary on his way to making 41 from 31 balls to lift Birendra Multiple total. Mehboob scored 13 off 23 and Jugal Chaudhary contributed 12 off 17 for the winners.

Amar Singh Rautela took four wickets for Heartland with Lalit Singh Bhandari, Rupesh Srivastav and Dines Agri getting one scalp apiece.

Thapa, who made 95 runs and picked up seven wickets from five matches in the tournament, was adjudged the man-of-the-series and got Rs 15,902. Sagar Pun (batsman) of Balkumari College and Bhuwan (bowler) of Heartland were other individual award winners.

Sagar made 114 runs and Bhuwan had taken nine wickets. The duo got Rs 5,902. Tribhuvan University Vice-chancellor Tirtha Raj Khaniya handed over the prizes to the winners. A total of 18 teams had participated in the 13-day tournament.
