Region-IV (Bhairahawa) topped Group ‘B’ table after a three wicket victory over Region-I (Biratnagar) in the Wai Wai Women’s U-19 National Cricket Tournament at the TU Stadium on Friday.
With both teams already making it to the semi-finals after winning their first two matches, Bhairahawa prevailed in the clash between the tough teams following another all round performance from Indu Barma. In an inconsquential match in the same group, Region-VI (Baitadi) signed off from the tournament with their first victory defeating Region-VIII (Pokhara) by 37 runs.
Bhairahawa will now play Group ‘A’ runners up Region-V (Nepalgunj) and Biratnagar will be up against table toppers and defending champions Region-VII (Janakpur). Both last four matches are scheduled for Sunday.
In the first match today, Biratnagar made 98-7 from 25 overs before Bhairahawa reached 100-7 in 23 overs. Indu’s 25-run unbeaten innings was crucial for Bhairahawa who were reduced to 2-4 in the second over.
Opener Nitu Bhandari and Aakshya Gurung steadied the ship for Bhairahawa with a 51-run partnership for the third wicket. Yanji Sherpa then reduced the two set batswomen as their scores read 63-4 after 14 overs.
Nitu top scored in the match with a 37-ball 27 with one boundary and Aakshya made 14 off 35. The scores soon read 65-5 after the dismissal of Aasna Thapa and a run out of Soniya Poudel made it 72-6 by the 17th over.
Biratnagar sensed victory after Samjhana dismissed Saiyya Gurung (two) but Indu stayed firm and took the team across the line. Indu hit one boundary in her innings with one boundary. Yanji finished with 21-3 from five overs.
Earlier, Indu took two crucila wickets that of set Kajol Shrestha and Sangita Rai (three) to put Biratnagar in the backfoot. Kajol made a match-high 35 off 56 with one four. Samjhana made 13 and Sabnam Budhathoki was unbeaten on 15 off 17. Sudha Thapa, Alisha KC and Soniya Poudel also took one wicket each for Bhairahawa. In the second match, an unbeaten 39 off 64 from Bindu Rawal took Baitadi to 125-8 in 25 overs. Baitadi were reeling at 47-3 but Bindu and Anjali Chand recovered their team with a 41-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Anjali collected some quick runs making 21 off 18. Pragya Pokharel took three wickets for Pokhara who conceded 39 extra runs. Baitadi scorecard read no boundaries.
Baitadi bowlers too gave away 37 extras but Pokhara suprisingly managed only 88-4 in 25 overs. Pragya (15), Sushil Gurung (12) and Priya Gurung (12) made runs in double figures for Pokhara. Chetana Bohora took two wickets, while Sonu Khadka and Anjali had one scalp apiece for Baitadi.
