Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) crushed Region No 3 (Kathmandu) by 125 runs to make a triumphant start in the Pepsi Standard Chartered One Day National Cricket Tournament on Wednesday.
Held at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds, last edition’s runners-up Bhairahawa rode on a fair amount of contribution from their top four batsmen and a half century from Prakash KC to make 227 all out in 45.3 overs. Spinners Lal Bahadur Adhikari and Sushan Bhari Shrestha picked up three wickets each as Kathmandu were packed up for 102 runs in 35.4 overs.
In a hapless Kathmandu scorecard, opener Pramod Basnet was the top scorer with 21 runs, while Suman Uday (17), Sanjay Basnet (15) and Arjun Adhikari (15) were the remaining batsmen to make runs in double figures.
Lal Bahadur finished with the miserly figures of 3-14 from 10 overs and Sushan Bhari took 3-12 from seven overs. Dipendra Yadav also had two scalps for Bhairahawa.
Earlier, Sabin Shakya (19) and Faizlur Rehman Khan gave Kathmandu a decent start with a 36-run stand. Though Bhairahawa longed for big partnerships in their innings, their batsmen kept on contributing to take their team across 200-mark.
Faizlur made 27 off 30 with five boundaries, Shankar Rana scored 36 off 42 with seven fours and Nirmal Thapa made 19 off 29 with two hits to the fence. Prakash then stepped in then played some delightful strokes making 62 off 82 with seven boundaries and two sixes.
Prakash was adjudged the man-of-the-match. Sonu Tamang took 3-57 from 8.3 overs from Kathmandu with Pramod (2-20) and Prashanna Shakya (2-29) sharing four wickets between them in their economical 20 overs.
