Bhairahawa, Biratnagar cruise to easy victories

Region-IV (Bhairahawa) and Region-I (Biratnagar won their opening matches of the Wai Wai Women’s U-19 National Cricket Tournmanet at theTU Stadium on Wednesday. In the Group ‘B’ matches that began today, Biratnagar defeated Region-VI (Baitadi) by 29 runs, while Bhairahawa crushed Region-VIII (Pokhara) by eight wickets. Biratnagar batted first and after Baitadi bowlers conceded 30 extras, they reached 108-8 in 25 overs. Baitadi, in reply, were bundled out for 79 in 18 overs. Sangita Rai, Spana Shrestha and Yanji Sherpa picked up two wickets in each for Biratnagar. Sonu Khadka top scored for Baitadi making 25 off 34 deliveries with two boundaries, while next best contributor was 23 sundries conceded by Biratnagar bowlers. Anjali Chand collected some quick run for Baitadi with a 14-ball 13 with two hits to the fence but Chetana Bohora was their next best contributor with seven runs. Other batswomen even failed to touch five runs. Sabnam Rai also took one wicket for Biratnagar. Earlier, a composed 25 off 39 from player-of-the-match Samjhana Budhathoki anchored the stumbling Biratnagar innings that was reduced to 27-3 after 8 overs. Roma Thapa and Rosana Rai guided Biratnagar towards the triple figures with a 32-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Roma made 21 off 32 with one boundary, while Rosana’s 25-ball 12 included one four. Kajol Shrestha scored 15 off 25 from the top order hitting two boundaries. Anjali Chanda, Kabita Kunwar and Hema Ayer took two wickets each for Baitadi. Chetana Bohora also had one scalp. Bhairahawa, meanwhile, wasted no time in their victory bowling out Pokhara for 68 in 20.3 overs before reaching the target in just 12.2 overs losing two wickets. Soniya Poudel left Pokhara out of sorts with a five-wicket haul that ran riot over their middle and lower order. Player-of-the-match Soniya returned with the figures of 5-11 from five overs. Barsha Rana polished off the lower middle order  returning with the figures of 3-9 from 4.3 overs in a sorry looking scorecard that read only one double figure — that of Sushila Gurung (12 off 23). Pokhara could have suffered further humiliation had not Bhairahawa conceded 24 extras. Indu Barma also took one wicket for Bhairahawa. Barsha Rana (eight) and Pratikshya Basyal gave Bhairahawa a mediocre start adding 17 runs in four overs. Nitu Bhandari (five) was next to go with Bhairahawa scores reading 31-2 after 6.5 overs. Pratikshya, however, remained firm and along with Aakshya  Gurung (10), she safely guided Bhairahawa home. Pratikshya hit one four in her 36 off 29. Aarya Aryal and Prava Nepali took one wicket each for Pokhara. Janakpur and Nepalgunj have already reached the semi-finals from Group ‘A’.
