Veteran Basanta Regmi and middle order batsman Sharad Vesawkar were the big names left out as Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Sunday announced a 20-member preliminary squad for the upcoming Tri-Series involving the Netherlands and Malaysia.
The Tri-Series, Nepal’s first international tournament after hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 Tri-Series against Oman and the USA in January, 2020, is slated for April 18-24.
Basanta and Sharad have not been in the Nepal’s Twenty20 team for quite a while and missed four official tournaments in September’s Tri-Series in Qatar, October’s Pentanguar Series in Oman, December’s South Asian Games held in Nepal in 2019. Subsequently, they were also left out of February-March ACC Eastern Region Twenty20 Asia Cup Qualifier in 2020.
Lokesh Bam and Shahab Alam were both called for the first and only phase of camp beginning from Tuesday.
The 20-member squad includes Gyanendra Malla, Paras Khadka, Dipendra Singh Airee, Sandeep Lamichhane, Abinash Bohora, Aarif Sheikh, Aashif Sheikh, Kushal Bhurtel, Kushal Malla, Bikram Sob, Sundeep Jora, Pawan Sarraf and Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi.
Also left out was Prithu Baskota who is in a comeback trail following a consistent performance in the domestic 50-over tournaments.
The squad is announced by chief selector Uttam Karmacharya in coordination with national team capatain Gyanendra Malla and coach Dav Whatmore. The preliminary squad will now be cut to 15-member final team and will have four reserved players.
Nepal have not played an international match after the Eastern Region Qualifier in March, 2020.
