Basanta bats then bowls Nepal to victory

Basanta Regmi put an all round show as Nepal defeated Canterbury Selection-XI by six runs in their second practice match ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Sydhem, New Zealand on Monday.


Nepal 210-9 in 50 overs following a team batting display where Gyanendra Malla top scored with 47 and Basanta blitzed in his 43 runs.


Basanta returned to pick up three wickets as Canterbury were restricted to 204-9.


Canterbury lost opener Hugh Patterson (nine) early but another opener Rapson and No 3 batsman Chamberlain (18) resurrected their innings with a 61-run stand.


Rapson top scored in the match with 54 runs, while Jeff Case tried to lift Canterbury with his 46 but in vain.


Apart from Basanta, Avinash Karn, Som Pal Kami, Sagar Pun and Shakti Gauchan also picked up one wicket each.


Earlier, openers Mahesh Chhetri (16) and Anil Mandal (18) gave Nepal a modest 38-run stand for Nepal. After both were dismissed, Gyanendra held Nepali innings.


Skipper Paras Khadka was retired hurt for 26, while Sharad Vesawkar also contributed 26.


Basanta hit three boundaries and two sixes, while Gyanendra’s innings included three boundaries.


Nepal will wrap up their pre tournament preparation with another practice match against the same side on Tuesday.
