Baitadi lift second U-19 title

Region No 6 (Baitadi) ran riot over Region No 8 (Pokhara) in defense of a low total to lift their second Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament title at the TU Stadium on Thursday.

In a low scoring championship match, Baitadi hammered Pokhara by 96 runs despite they were bundled out for an unsafe 153 all out in 49 overs. Pokhara, in reply, were packed up for just 57 in 23.5 overs. A win could have handed Pokhara their first ever national level title, but instead they allowed Baitadi to emulate 2010 success succumbing to an accurate bowling led by skipper Prem Tamang.

Prem, a right arm off break bowler, took charge of Baitadi attack himself from the first over and tightened the screws operating his bowlers perfectly in an overcast condition.

Prem struck first removing opener Sanjosh Bhattarai (one) cheaply before Pokhara came up with their best partnership of the day – 22 runs. Khem Raj Poudel and Rajesh Lamsal offered the resistance until medium pacer Kamal Airee got off the mark with the scalp of the latter for 12.

Khem Raj tried his best to stick at the wicket but was finally undone by Yogendra Karki as Pokhara innings read 43-5. Prem and Dhiraj Jairu finished it off picking up two wickets each. Pokhara lost their last five wickets for just eight runs.

Khem Raj hit two boundaries in his 21 off 46. Man-of-the-final Prem returned with 3-18 from 6.5 overs, while Dhiraj Jairu took two wickets in his only over of the day with Yogendra picking up 2-1 from three overs. Naresh Thapa also picked up one wicket.

Baitadi were also not at safe haven when they lost the first two wickets for 16 runs. Yogendra and Umesh Pahari shared 37-run partnership but their middle order suddenly collapsed with the dismissal of the latter. Yogendra followed soon after making 25 off 46 with four boundaries. Umesh made 16 off 38 with one hit to the fence.

Prem got himself involved in a 23-run stand with Arun who also shared 23-run partnership with Kamal (13) taking Baitadi across 150-run mark. Prem made 23 off 47 with two boundaries and Arun scored 20 off 38 with one four.

Dipesh Shrestha, Sushil Kandel and Bipin Khatri picked up two wickets each for Pokhara, while Santosh Upadhyaya, Rajesh and Sangharsha Poudel had one victim each.
