Avinash Karn scored a half century and an opening burst of seam bowling from Kalicharan Yadav helped Region No 1 (Biratnagar) defeat Region No 9 (Dhangadhi) by 64 runs in their opening match of the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament on Tuesday.
Biratnagar were 181 all out in 45.1 overs at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds where top order rescued them. Dhangadhi were thrown out of contest early in the game with Kalicharan picking up three of the first five wickets to fall.
Ankit Subedi (15) was among the first two Biratnagar wickets to fall for 26 runs on the board before Avinash and Niraj Mukhiya halted the proceedings for Dhangadhi. The two batsmen shared 51 runs for the third wicket before a double run out shunned Biratnagar.
Niraj was first to go for 40 followed by the dismissal of new man Mukunda Yadav. Niraj hit three fours and a six in 66 balls.
After the setback, Avinash remained calm and shared another 49 runs with Rimesh Regmi (20). While other Biratnagar batsmen kept losing wickets cheaply, Avinash made sure that he completed his half century and ultimately guided his team to a total that proved to be a mammoth.
Avinash completed his half century in 108 balls and was dismissed as the ninth Biratnagar wicket for 54 off 113 hitting five boundaries. Arujun Chapagain picked up 4-48 for Biratnagar, while Dipendra Airee took 2-22. Bhuwak KC and Sunil Dhamala also picked up one wicket each.
Kalicharan put Biratnagar in the pole position in their defense when his three wickets reduced Dhangadhi to 40-5 inside 13 overs. Raju Rijal and Dipendra made 27 runs each which only served as an ointment to a bruised Dhangadhi line-up.
Firdosh Ansari was too meager in his 2-8 from six overs, while Minash Thapa (2-23), Kshitiz Portel (2-10) and Mukund Yadav (1-17) shared five wickets between them. Kalicharan was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
