Dassanayake officially becomes coach

Sep 01, 2014 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Pubudu Dassanayake on Monday became the official coach of the national cricket team after signing an agreement with the government in a contract that will keep him in the position for June 15, 2015.

The government had handed Dassanayake a one-year extension on July after the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) said it would not extend his contract after it expired on June 30 sighting budget crunch.

Youth and Sports Ministry Joint Secretary Choodamani Paudel and Dassanayake signed the agreement amidst a programme at the MoYS office in Kamalpokhari in presence of National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and CAN officials that included acting general secretary Uttam Karmacharya and member Arun Satyal.

Dassanayake's role was not clear after the CAN said it was unaware about the extension following an stance from the MoYS who earlier had chosen not to discuss about the extension with the cricket governing body.

The agreement all but ended the elasticized saga which had been creating confusion over Dassanayake's role. Karmacharya further put an end to it. "He will begin looking after the national team – preparing for the 17th Asian Games – from Tuesday. We will sign another agreement with Dassanayake on Sunday following our boarding meeting. But the Asian Games preparing team will be handed over to the coach informally on Tuesday," said Karmacharya.

MoYS Secretary Dipendra Nath Sharma put lights on the role that has been given to Dassanayake in the contract. "He will work as a consultant with the ministry and chief coach of the CAN. He can come up with the plans and programmes for the development of Nepali cricket and submit a monthly report to us," said Sharma.

Dassanayake will be receiving $8000 a month apart from an additional Rs 200,000 for general expenses.
