Nepal rope in Patwal as cricket team's head coach

May 31, 2019 | CN Staff |

Nepal have roped in Umesh Patwal as their new head coach of the national cricket team, meaning the Mumbai coach will be the key to their journey in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 Series.

In absence of the Cricket Association of Nepal, currently under the ICC suspension, National Sports Council had proposed the International Cricket Council about recruiting Patwal for which the world cricket governing body gave a green signal. He is signing the contract in presence of NSC officials on Friday evening.

After the departure of Sri Lankan Pubudu Dassanayake in 2016, home-grown coach Jagat Tamatta had been looking after the Nepali team which earned the One Day International status last year through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. Patwal then was working as the batting consultant of the Nepali team.

Patwal was also working as the batting consultant for Nepal when the team earned their first every ODI Series victory which they did by defeating the United Arab Emirates 2-1 in January. They later on capped the memorable triumph with another 2-1 series victory in a three-match Twenty20 Internationals.

The national team cricket team has long been seeking an experienced international coach to take the reins of the Nepali cricket after they earned the ODI status. The team members had credited their ODI and Twenty20 success in Dubai to Patwal for changing the approach to the game and coming up with proper planning with the bat.

Patwal was also the batting consultant with Afghanistan national team during the ICC World Twenty20 and Asia Cup in Bangladesh. He also had coaching stints with Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) academy in Nagpur, the Global Cricket School and at the Payyade Cricket Club. a
