Goldens enter playoffs, Stars bow out

Feb 16, 2019 | CN Staff |

Two-time defending champions Dhangadhi Stars were knocked out as Kathmandu Goldens entered the Dhangadhi Premier League playoffs on a day when no match was possible at the Fapla Cricket Ground.

A wet outfield forced Stars to share points with Mahendranagar United, meaning they languish at the bottom of the six-team table with just one point from four matches.

Despite of relentless hard work from ground staffs and volunteers to soak up the wet outfield, the ground was deemed unplayable for Saturday's both matches. Even if they defeat Rupandehi Challengers in their last match on February 18, Stars couldn't topple fourth-placed Biratnagar Kings who have four points from four matches.

The wash out worked in the favour for Goldens who made it through to the playoffs with two matches in hand, currently leading the table with five points. Goldens on Saturday shared points with Karan KC's Biratnagar Kings.

The chances for United and Kings both hang by thread as the two teams are dependent on each other to determine their fate. A win against Attariya on Sunday could still be inadequate for Sharas Vesawkar's United. They would have to pray that Kings lose to Attariya in their last league game the next day.

With the skies clearing out throughout Saturday, Fapla could be hosting two full matches on Saturday unless rain is back. Goldens will take on Challengers in the other match on Sunday.
